First Frost

Friday, December 2, 2016 4 Permalink 1

It came as a surprise. -1c is not supposed to be this frozen. It should pass like a dusting of snow. Instead this frost crept in on the fog, slipped between the leaves, permeated deeply, and then crystallized. The spigots were not turned off. The tender plants were not covered. It’s as if everything just stopped cold in the middle of fall. A new season started in the night.

It doesn’t feel wintry in Boston but any moment now we’ll plunge into deep freeze. Some weather people predict another freak winter with the polar vortex going wobbly. Sorry about the plants on the roof. The kumquats, and the lotuses?
